Anthony Donaldson
Year, Birthplace 1939,
Anthony Donaldson studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and then at the University of London. He was one of the founders of the pop art movement in Great Britain in the 1960s, participating in important exhibitions in this era: Young Contemporaries between 1959 and 1962 and The New Generation: 1964 at the Whitechapel Gallery. With acrylic lacquer in plain colours, he created very smooth versions of naked pin-ups taken from images in advertising and magazines, along with sequential, almost cinematographic images. This rather masochistic imagery brought him recognition. He spent two years in Los Angeles starting in 1966, which would alter his style noticeably. In the 1970s he began to produce large-scale sculptures in steel. J-FC
