Valentine Hugo first exhibited her paintings in 1909. From 1930, she became an inspiring figure for the surrealists and designed theatrical scenery and costumes, illustrated books and made portraits of her friends. In 1931 she became André Breton’s lover, accompanying him on holidays until their separation in 1932. She carried on living at 42 rue Fontaine, in the same building as Breton, with whom she stayed friends.
