Considered ‘degenerate’ and thus destined to be destroyed by the Nazis, works from this period are particularly rare. Carl Buchheister used collage, which he had learnt from his friend Kurt Schwitters, who frequently employed the technique. In 1932, Buchheister created a series of numbered Diagonalkompositionen – 132 a, 232 a and 332 r –, titles which were supplemented by complementary descriptions – Rotes Dreieck [Red triangle], Roter Strich [Red stroke], Fahne [Flag]. The series ‘332 r’ includes six Vervielfältigung (multiple versions) based on the Modelbild (model image) which is the work shown here (the catalogue raisonné states that the original model and the multiple numbered ‘a’ are clearly the same work).
