Composition (1917) shows Liubov Sergeievna Popova’s interest in presenting flat surfaces with a characteristic tension. The geometric, coloured, apparently static planes convey dynamism. This study reflects well the spirit of the art association Supremus, which was created in 1916 by Kazimir Malevich and which brought together Popova and several of his student-disciples, including Olga Rozanova, Ivan Klioune, Mihail Mienkov and Vera Pestel.
Pavel Popov, the artist’s brother, Moscow; M. Goldberg, Zvenigorod; George Costakis, Moscow; private collection, Athens; Leonard Hutton Galleries; acquired in 1999.
