Rethinking art history in the work of Heimo Zobernig
Rethinking art history in the work of Heimo Zobernig
Jürgen Bock
Using the exhibitions of Heimo Zobernig, this lecture aims to analyse the recent history of the art exhibition and the "necessary" myths for constructing (an) art history, and how this is subtly undermined by the artist's work, particularly when his paradoxical critique includes references to the "operational system" of art, articulated in his paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, and the exhibitions as a medium themselves.
Jürgen Bock is a curator, critic, and director of the Maumaus Independent Study Programme and its associated exhibition space, Lumiar Cité in Lisbon. Exhibitions he has curated include: CCB Project Room, featuring Eleanor Antin, Nathan Coley, Harun Farocki, and Renée Green, among others (Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, 2000-2001); Andreas Siekmann (Triennale-India, New Delhi, 2005), Ângela Ferreira. Maison Tropicale (Portuguese Pavilion, 52nd Venice Biennale, 2007); Heimo Zobernig (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, 2012); Allan Sekula. The Dockers' Museum (La Criée, Rennes, 2012; Lumiar Cité, 2013; Johann Jacobs Museum, Zürich, 2014), Ângela Ferreira. Entrer dans la mine (3rd Lubumbashi Biennale, 2013) and Indépendance cha cha (Lumiar Cité, 2014).
