Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942). Self-portraits of the World
Throughout her short life (1908-1942) the Swiss writer, journalist, photographer and traveller Annemarie Schwarzenbach, a mythical figure of travel writing, carried out numerous photographic reports during her constant wandering through Europe, the Middle East, Africa and North America. Out of these, her journey through Lisbon, at the height of the dictatorial regime of the Estado Novo (1941-1942), is a highlight. This exhibition presents, through 5 nuclei, around 200 of the photographs she took, accompanied by extensive original documentation, analysed in the historic, political and cultural context of Modernity, which allow us to understand the nature of the world between the two World Wars and the way in which a European woman observed and related to 'foreign' cultures in the historical, political and cultural context of modernity.
