Julian Opie is a contemporary British artist known for his distinctive depictions of figures, portraits, and landscapes. The highly stylised treatment Opie gives to his subjects—features outlined in thick black and filled in with solid areas of flat colour—is a blend of Pop Art and Minimalism with a wholly contemporary sensibility.
This will be Opie's first solo exhibition in Lisbon; to him, the presentation of his work at Museu Coleção Berardo is a challenge and an opportunity he has embraced with great enthusiasm and professionalism. The main theme of the show is people, portrayed in various ways and materials, moving and stationary, painted and sculpted, running and turning and standing. There are a few buildings and animals as well, to broaden the subject matter and expand the discussion. For the last gallery, Opie has produced a new giant work that, inspired by the beautiful Belém Tower, alludes to Manueline architecture.
